Protecting your wireless network is one of the first steps you have to take in order to stop other people using your Internet connection, altering your network settings, or even worse stealing your private information and files.
All the necessary steps for securing the wireless network can be performed from the Admin Tool. Since the wireless gateway comes with a default username and password, the first step you have to take is to change the Admin Tool password. However, before we continue we have to make clear that the Admin Tool password and the Wireless Password are not the same. Changing the Wireless network password will be covered in another article.
How to Change the Admin Tool Password
So let’s start by logging into the Admin Tool first.
Step 1 – Logging into the Admin tool
To perform this initial step you can either follow our Comcast Router login tutorial or do the following:
In your browser’s address bar type the default router IP address i.e. 10.0.0.1 and press Enter on your keyboard.
When the Admin Tool login window opens type admin as username and password as password. These are default login details and in the following part we are changing the password.
Click the LOGIN button.
Step 2 – Changing the Admin Tool password
In the new window look at the top-right corner of your screen and click the Change password.
Step 3 – Setting up a new password
First enter your Current password and then enter and re-enter your new password. For better security make sure to type at least 8-characters long password combining both uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers. If the system allows, you can also add some special characters which will boost the strength of your password. Make sure to write down the new password somewhere safe.
Click the SAVE button and login again.
As you can see it was quite easy to change the Admin Tool password and it is recommended to do this and the other wireless network security steps as soon as possible. It is also good to change the Admin tool password from time to time.
